A Love Letter to Betty by Tiffany McDaniel

I’ve been sitting with this book for weeks now, trying to find the words. And the truth is… I still don’t have them. Betty by Tiffany McDaniel cracked something open in me. It’s raw and lyrical, haunting and healing—one of those rare books that grabs your soul and refuses to let go. I knew within a few lines that this wasn’t just going to be a five-star read. This was going to be an all-timer. A new favorite. A book I’ll be pushing into hands for years to come. So, instead of my typical book review, I've written love letter to Betty, instead. If you’ve ever read something that felt like it saw you—even the parts you thought you’d buried—then you know the kind of magic I’m talking about.

Publisher's Synopsis

A stunning, lyrical novel set in the rolling foothills of the Appalachians about a young girl and the family truths that will haunt her for the rest of her life.

“A girl comes of age against the knife.”

So begins the story of Betty Carpenter. Born in a bathtub in 1954 to a white mother and a Cherokee father, Betty is the sixth of eight siblings. The world they inhabit in the rural town of Breathed, Ohio, is one of poverty and violence—both from outside the family and, devastatingly, from within. But despite the hardships she faces, Betty is resilient. Her curiosity about the natural world, her fierce love for her sisters, and her father’s brilliant stories are kindling for the fire of her own imagination, and in the face of all to which she bears witness, Betty discovers an escape: she begins to write.

Inspired by generations of her family, Tiffany McDaniel sets out to free the past by delivering this heartbreaking yet magical story—a remarkable novel that establishes her as one of the most important voices in American fiction.

My Thoughts

Reading this masterpiece felt like holding up a mirror. It was healing—like stitching together forgotten flesh wounds. Soothing. An exorcism of feeling. An existential experience, like peering into a snow globe of my own past, dandelion seeds drifting aimlessly on a warm summer breeze.

It felt like a hug from someone I missed dearly, one that left me feeling whole… and wholeheartedly alone. A painful parting. A beautiful rendering of a life shaped by the messy, magnetic force of family—with all the good, bad, and ugly that comes from loving and being loved by imperfect people.

A jarring reminder that intergenerational trauma scars deeper than the thin skin we wear to protect our fragile hearts. But also, a hopeful portrait of cycle-breaking—because someone, somehow, showed us how.

It’s tragic, and truthful. A vivid portrayal of poverty that reveals both the ache and the quiet beauty of making do—of learning to want, to dream, to see magic in the hands of a parent who knows how to spin wonder from next to nothing. Childhood captured in a jar, with a little dirt and feathers to make it stick.

Summer. Fall. And every magical day in between.

Thunderstorms you can see, and the kind you can only feel pulsing beneath your skin.

Earth magic. A full moon. Growing up.

Growing into a new self—one whose shiny skin glows too bright for the room.

Paneled walls. Painted-over window sills.

Moving again when the rent goes up.

Never wanting for anything… because love was always enough.

My heart beats for this book. My mother would have loved this book. I miss her.

Thank you, Tiffany, for helping me remember.

My Rating

Betty isn’t an easy read—but it’s an essential one. It’s a book that lingers, that changes you, that asks you to look closely at pain, beauty, and the stories we inherit. I’ll be thinking about this one for a long, long time.
