Publisher's Synopsis

Nikki hasn’t seen her grandmother in years. So when the elder calls out of the blue with an urgent request for Nikki to visit her in the hills of western North Carolina, Nikki hesitates only for a moment. After years of silence in her family, due to a mysterious estrangement between her mother and grandmother, she’s determined to learn the truth while she still can.

But instead of answers about the recent past, Mother Rita tells Nikki an incredible story of a kingdom on this very mountain, and of her great-great-great grandmother, Luella, who would become its queen.

It sounds like the makings of a fairy tale—royalty among a community of freed people. But the more Nikki learns about the Kingdom of the Happy Land, and the lives of those who dwelled in the ruins she discovers in the woods, the more she realizes how much of her identity and her family’s secrets are wrapped up in these hills. Because this land is their legacy, and it will be up to her to protect it before it, like so much else, is stolen away.

Inspired by true events, Happy Land is a transporting multi-generational novel about the stories that shape us and the dazzling courage it takes to dream.

My Review

I didn’t think Dolen Perkins-Valdez could ever match the brilliance of Take My Hand—but I was wrong.

From the very first page of Happy Land, I was completely sucked in by the characters, the drama, and the unfolding mystery. Why did Mother Rita call Nikki home? How did Louella’s story tie into the present? The questions just kept coming—and I couldn’t stop turning the pages.

While the plot may seem straightforward at first glance, DPV’s mastery of nuance and character development kept me fully engaged. And just when I thought I had it figured out, she pulled everything together in such a seamless and powerful way, bringing the focus squarely onto the injustice of unlawful land acquisitions. That ending? Chef’s kiss.

No one tells stories of social and racial justice quite like DPV. And while Happy Land didn’t hit me with the same emotional force as Take My Hand, it still completely captivated me. The historical elements were rich and layered. Starting over after slavery required unimaginable courage—but founding an entire kingdom took that courage to a whole new level.

Louella’s leadership, especially how she mobilized the women in her community to build a sustainable income and fight for a seat at the table, was profoundly moving. And the emotional tension between Nikki and Mother Rita? It's so real, so raw, and incredibly relatable.

The book beautifully explores the idea that we are shaped by our origins—our families and histories. No matter how far we go, how high we climb, or how much we try to escape, our roots remain part of us. That message hit me especially hard for me at this stage in my life.

I know I’m rambling now, but that’s the effect this book had on me. I loved it, and I can’t wait for everyone to meet these unforgettable characters.

My Rating

Fans of intergenerational fiction will not want to miss Happy Land. This novel masterfully weaves together a dual-timeline narrative, bringing history to life with rich detail and unforgettable characters. With its beautifully layered storytelling and emotional depth, Happy Land is historical fiction at its finest—a moving exploration of family, resilience, and the hidden connections between past and present.
