Keeper of Lost Children Book Review
Some authors just get you. The way they write, the stories they choose to tell, the characters they build, it all feels like it was crafted with your reading heart in mind. Sadeqa Johnson is one of those authors for me. And if I had any lingering doubt before picking up Keeper of Lost Children, this powerful new historical fiction completely erased it. I was consumed by this story. The kind of consumed where you start feeling sad it's almost over. Johnson delivers exactly what I crave in historical fiction: richly drawn, character-driven storytelling with a plot that feels propulsive. If you love powerhouse historical fiction, then you'll absolutely love this new Sadeqa Johnson. Whether you’re looking to diversify your reading or you simply need your next can’t-stop-thinking-about-it recommendation, let me tell you why this book deserves to be at the very top of your TBR.

Publisher's Synopsis
Ethel Gathers, the proud wife of an American Officer, is living in Occupied Germany in the 1950s. After discovering a local orphanage filled with the abandoned mixed-race children of German women and Black American GI’s, Ethel feels compelled to help find these children homes.
Philadelphia born Ozzie Phillips volunteers for the recently desegregated army in 1948, eager to make his mark in the world. While serving in Manheim, Germany, he meets a local woman, Jelka, and the two embark on a relationship that will impact their lives forever.
In 1965 Maryland, Sophia Clark is given an opportunity to attend a prestigious all white boarding school and escape her heartless parents. While at the school, she discovers a secret that upends her world and sends her on a quest to unravel her own identity.
Toggling between the lives of these three individuals, Keeper of Lost Children explores how one woman’s vision will change the course of countless lives, and demonstrates that love in its myriad of forms—familial, parental, and forbidden, even love of self—can be transcendent.
My Review
This is how you do it!
Johnson’s latest historical fiction novel is exactly what I want from a book. Not only does she masterfully craft compelling characters, she weaves together historical events and people in ways that feel authentic to the character stories rather than just facts. I'd never thought of the lasting impact of WWII from this perspective making the subject matter feel fresh in a sea of other WWII-adjacent fiction.
Full of amazing Black characters inspired by real people, this story is the perfect example of why it’s so important to read Black stories. Johnson ties in SO many important aspects of the lives of Black Americans, from the racial divides still present during WWII (when many Black men and women signed up to serve their country) to the exhilarating opportunities to be the first to break through color barriers only to face new forms of prejudice. In the hands of such an amazing author, the story sings with love, pride, and cultural ties.
My favorite part of this book was Johnson’s portrayal of Ozzie, in whom she created a caring and intelligent character. He is flawed but beautifully human. I love books that portray the Black male experience in such a positive way. Hats off, Mrs Johnson!
I never once felt bored with this story or confused by the triple POV. The book utilizes three narrators which helps to bring the distinct voices of the three main characters to life. And in the end the three storylines tie-in together in such a beautiful way that the ending feels oh-so-satisfying.
My Rating
Truly, Keeper of Lost Children is spectacular and deserves a spot on every historical fiction lover’s TBR. It’s layered and discussion-worthy, making it absolutely perfect for book clubs. If you love the character-driven depth or the heart-forward storytelling of Kate Quinn, Lisa Wingate, or Ellen Marie Wiseman, you’ll find so much to love here.
Huge thank you to Simon Books and PRH Audio for the early access. This is officially my new favorite Sadeqa Johnson.
