The Unmaking of June Farrow
While some of this book has a contemporary setting, much of the story takes place in the past, which most historical fiction readers will find appealing. A beautiful story of love, sacrifice, and family, The Unmaking of June Farrow is one of my all-time favorite magical realism novels. I could not put this one down, and neither will you!
Outlander
Though it's likely not for everyone, Outlander is THE best example of historical fiction + magical realism I've ever read. Full of passion, adventure, and atmosphere, this time travel series sets the bar high. Be sure to check your trigger warnings, though!
The Last Heir to Blackwood Library
Hester Fox is one of my go-to authors for magical realism for historical fiction lovers. Her novels always have an element of fantasy that borders on horror but reads like magical realism. And this dark novel is one of her best!
The Familiars
This atmospheric tale of friendship and motherhood is highly feminist and thought-provoking. The magic in this one is more in-the-eye-of-the-beholder, but it's easy to see why so many count this gothic novel as a favorite magical realism novel.
The Lighthouse Witches
One of the most contemporary novels on the list, The Lighthouse Witches, has a surprise historical element that I loved! With lots of great family drama and a terrific sister story, this book needs to be on your radar.
The White Hare
The White Hare is the dark horse of this list. Everything about this book was perfect! Full of local folklore and atmosphere, The White Hare is one of the most pulse-pounding on this list. Bonus: no one's ever heard of it!
The Witch's Daughter
I'm a sucker for a book about witches, especially one with lots of earth magic. The Witch's Daughter is one of the most intricately woven magical realism novels on the list. This multi-timeline witch tale is hard to top.
The Minuscule Mansion of Myra Malone
It's been nearly MANY months since I finished The Minuscule Mansion of Myra Malone, and I still think of it often. This quirky dual-timeline novel explores intergenerational trauma within the walls of the perfect miniature mansion.
The Invisible Hour
For many, Hoffman is the queen of the witchy novel. But The Invisible Hour is all about time travel, books, and the power of love. Fantastical, atmospheric, and romantic, this book will make a lasting impression.
The Warm Hands of Ghosts
This book will literally take your breath away and leave you marveling at the beauty within its pages. The Warm Hands of Ghosts is a masterful WWI novel that explores light vs dark, love and longing, and the devastating effect of war. A must-read!
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue
One of the BEST books on this list, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is a genre-bending exploration of being human and belonging. While much of the book is contemporary, the historical flashbacks bring the story to life! It's a must-read.
The Witches at the End of the World
Less a tale of witchcraft (though there is plenty) and more a tale of ethnocide, The Witches at the End of the World is a powerful story of two sisters struggling to find their way in the world after the loss of their matriarch. A stunning glimpse of Nordic culture and folklore, this magical realism novel stuck with me long after the last pages.
