The House of Eve: Book Review
Have you ever picked up a book that completely surprised you in the best possible way? That was The House of Eve by Sadeqa Johnson for me. It was my first time reading anything by Johnson, and let me just say — it will not be my last. From the very first page, I was hooked by her gorgeous writing, layered characters, and the emotional weight of this story. It's one of those books that lingers with you — the kind you find yourself thinking about long after you’ve finished.

Publisher's Synopsis
1950s Philadelphia: fifteen-year-old Ruby Pearsall is on track to becoming the first in her family to attend college. But a taboo love affair threatens to pull her back down into the poverty and desperation that has been passed on to her like a birthright.
Eleanor Quarles arrives in Washington, DC, with ambition and secrets. When she meets the handsome William Pride at Howard University, they fall madly in love. But William hails from one of DC’s elite wealthy Black families, and his parents don’t let just anyone into their fold. Eleanor hopes that a baby will make her finally feel at home in William’s family and grant her the life she’s been searching for. But having a baby—and fitting in—is easier said than done.
With their stories colliding in the most unexpected of ways, Ruby and Eleanor will both make decisions that shape the trajectory of their lives.
My Review
This was my first Sadeqa Johnson novel — but it definitely won’t be my last. I absolutely loved her writing style. While I initially found the shift in narration a little unconventional — Ruby’s story is told in first-person, while Eleanor’s unfolds in third — it didn’t take long before I stopped questioning it and just let myself get swept away. And I’m so glad I did.
Their stories unfold in alternating chapters — Ruby’s told in first-person, raw and intimate; Eleanor’s told in third-person, giving her story a slightly more distant, reflective tone. At first, the difference in narration styles feels unusual, but it quickly becomes clear how intentional it is — perfectly suiting the journeys of each woman.
The characters in this story absolutely leapt off the page. The dialogue felt so authentic, and the tension and raw emotion — especially in Ruby’s chapters — made it impossible not to feel deeply connected to their experiences. It was like walking in their shoes, seeing the world through their eyes, and carrying their heartbreak right alongside them.
The love stories at the heart of this novel are both captivating — one feels like a cautionary tale, while the other leans more into the fairytale — but neither is without its share of heartache. This book doesn’t shy away from pain or suffering, but it’s in that vulnerability where its beauty truly shines. If you have a beating heart, you’ll feel this one.
My Rating
If you love historical fiction that brings unforgettable female characters to life, The House of Eve is a book you won't want to miss. Set against a richly detailed historical backdrop, this novel explores the complicated choices women face when their dreams, desires, and societal expectations collide. With its powerful portrayal of ambition, love, sacrifice, and resilience, The House of Eve delivers both emotional depth and thought-provoking storytelling. It’s the kind of novel that doesn’t just entertain—it stays with you, leaving you thinking about the characters and their journeys long after you’ve turned the final page. Perfect for readers who crave stories that are both moving and memorable.
