Publisher's Synopsis
In 1927, eight-year-old Clara Harrington’s magical childhood shatters when her mother, renowned author, Bronwyn Newcastle Fordham, disappears off the coast of South Carolina. Bronwyn stunned the world with a book written in an invented language that became a national sensation when she was just twelve years old. Her departure leaves behind not only a devoted husband and heartbroken daughter, but also the hope of ever translating the sequel to her landmark work. As the headlines focus on the missing author, Clara yearns for something far deeper and more insatiable: her beautiful mother.
By 1952, Clara is an illustrator raising her own daughter, Wynnie. When a stranger named Charlie Jameson contacts her from London claiming to have discovered a handwritten dictionary of her mother’s lost language. Clara is skeptical. Compelled by the tragedy of her mother’s vanishing, she crosses the Atlantic with Wynnie only to arrive during one of London’s most deadly natural disasters—the Great Smog. With asthmatic Wynnie in peril, they escape the city with Charlie and find refuge in the Jameson’s family retreat nestled in the Lake District. It is there that Clara must find the courage to uncover the truth about her mother and the story she left behind.
My Review
Wow! I expected to enjoy Patti Callahan Henry's new book, but I didn't realize it would quickly become my favorite! The Story She Left Behind is a poignant exploration of family, identity, and the enduring power of stories.
Set against the atmospheric backdrop of 1952 England during the Great Smog, the novel follows Clara, an illustrator and single mother, as she embarks on a journey to uncover the truth about her mother, Bronwyn, a literary prodigy who vanished 25 years earlier. This quest leads Clara and her asthmatic daughter, Wynnie, from South Carolina to the misty landscapes of the English Lake District, weaving a tale rich in mystery and emotional depth.
Henry's lyrical prose brings each setting vividly to life, immersing readers in the fog-laden streets of London and the serene beauty of the Lake District. The book delves into loss, forgiveness, and the intricate and unbreakable bonds between mothers and daughters. Clara's determination to piece together her mother's past resonates deeply, highlighting the universal desire to understand one's origins and the stories that shape us.
Inspired by the real-life mystery of Barbara Newhall Follett—a child prodigy and author who disappeared without a trace—Henry masterfully blends historical events with fiction, crafting a captivating and thought-provoking narrative. The novel's exploration of a lost language and a hidden manuscript adds layers of intrigue, appealing to lovers of literary mysteries.
